Ever have a strong desire for an old-fashioned restaurant breakfast - you know, bacon and eggs, hash browns, toast, juice and coffee - served by a real waitress who comes to your table with an order pad in hand and pencil over her ear, and then brings all four orders at once, balancing the plates on both arms? Well, that may be a stretch, but you get the picture. There are actually eight such places in Bloomington-Normal, and one of the most popular is Times Past Inn in Towanda Plaza.
Serving breakfast Monday thru Saturday from 5:30 a.m. til 11:00 and 6:00 til 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Times Past is usually packed with locals who probably order the same thing every time they stop in. I know I do. Eggs over medium, bacon & hash browns crisp, whole wheat toast and coffee. Breakfast made-to-order. There are also omletes, ham & sausage, biscuits and gravy and steak & eggs, too - priced from $2.00 to $5.00 with prompt, friendly service at no extra charge.
Times Past is also a favorite B-N lunch spot, featuring sandwiches of all kinds, a good size salad bar, lunch buffet and "home-cooked" specials every weekday. For $4.95 during one week you might get chicken fried steak or meat loaf with mashed potatoes, beef stroganoff over noodles or roast turkey with dressing. The next week it might be chipped beef over biscuits, ham loaf with scalloped potatoes, chicken kiev with au gratin potatoes, open face hot pork or mushroom steak with mashed potatoes...the list goes on and on. You don't have to worry about variety at Times Past Inn. You could go every day and eat something different. It's all good, and all reasonably priced.
Dinner is served three days a week, Thursdays from 2 til 9, Fridays and Saturdays from 2 til 10, and features prime rib, steak, bbq ribs, shrimp, catfish & chicken, priced from $5.50 to $9.50.
So, if you'd like some good home cookin' without all the messy cleanup afterwards, try Times Past Inn. You won't be disappointed.
