When you say neighborhood bar and grill in this town, the first one that comes to my mind is Schooners, nestled in among homes and small businesses on the near east side of Bloomington. Established in the early '80s, Schooner's and its counterpart in Peoria are known best for "authentic" buffalo wings, GIANT tenderloin sandwiches and the Schooner Burger, which they claim is the best burger in town.

Served with bleu cheese and celery, Schooner's offers the best buffalo wings this side of, well, Buffalo. They sell 'em by the pound, mild or spicy, and it's hard to order enough when you're dining with friends. Their Famous King Tenderloin literally comes with FOUR BUNS, and its still almost too much to eat. Like they say on the menu: it "combines a week's worth of eating into one meal!" And don't forget the onion rings. More like an onion loaf, this tasty appetizer is a favorite with many regulars.

Schooner's offers Blue Plate Specials every weekday from 11 to 2, a Tuesday night "all you can eat" fish fry with homemade potato salad, baked beans & hush puppies, and a Sunday chicken fry served with homemade mashed potatoes, gravy, coleslaw and fresh baked dinner rolls. Delicious!

Homemade soups and chili in season, plus salads, sandwiches, catfish & chicken dinners, make Schooner's one of my favorite local restaurants. Oh, and they have a nice bar, too.
