Green Gables
Lake Bloomington

"You are about to experience the best food known to man. We are known worldwide for our hamburgers and cheeseburgers." That's what you'll see at the top of the menu at Green Gables, the only combination restaurant-bar-convenience store-bate shop around these parts, located about 10 miles northeast of the twin cities. A throwback to the old-style bar and grill, Green Gables can probably only seat about 20 people in the hard-back wooden booths, plus another 10 at the bar and maybe 20 more at tables that have been added in the convenience store area. There's a pool table and a couple video games in the middle of the room for entertainment, and a rural, country atmosphere all its own.

Open from "7:30ish" each morning for breakfast until "everyone goes home" at night, (usually about 11:00 p.m.) Green Gables is a local institution, known far and wide for its fantastic cheeseburgers, butterfly pork chop and tenderloin sandwiches, and deep-fried breaded mushrooms. They also offer ham and turkey subs, italian beef and bar-b-que pork and chicken breast sandwiches, soups in the winter, fries, onion rings, cheese balls, mozzerella sticks and breaded cauliflower. Prices range from $2.00 to $3.00 for breakfast, about the same for most sandwiches, and $1.10 to $3.29 for side orders. Four of us recently had four cheeseburgers, three sides and four soft drinks with free refills for $20.00, including the tip. Not bad.

The menu is simple, the people are friendly, and the setting is relaxed and comfortable. Green Gables is a regular stop for lake residents, boaters, and those who go to fish or just drive around the beautiful, scenic lake north of town. Just take I-39 north to Lake Bloomington Road, then east to Green Gables Road at the entrance of the lake complex. You can't miss it.
