One of the most difficult challenges of running a restaurant is maintaining it's consistency and quality over a long period of time. One in this community that has, is The Grand Cafe on the north edge of downtown Bloomington, at the corner of Main and Locust. Originally located above Osco's (next to the old Ensengerber's Furniture store on the square), this twin city institution has delighted natives, transplants and vistors alike from four separate downtown locations SINCE 1921!
I can remember enjoying Grand Cafe carry-out Chop Suey, Egg Foo Young - and by far the best egg rolls known to humankind - in those same little plain, white boxes with metal handles back when Savage Brothers Bowling Lanes was downtown on Front Street, and you could call Phone-A-Feast for a steak, catfish or chicken dinner. It was the sixties, and The Grand Cafe food is as good today as it was then.
It's a great place to eat lunch if you're in a hurry, as they offer five daily lunch specials priced under $5.00 that are ready in under five minutes. For the leisurely lunch or dinner, you name it and they've probably got it. As with most Chinese restaurants, there is no shortage of choices or combinations available, and everything I've had is worth ordering again.
It's not fancy, but its priced pretty reasonably. And like I said before, they have the best egg rolls I've ever eaten.
