Few restaurants in the Twin Cities offer the number and variety of burgers and other sandwiches as Arnie’s at the Airport, located in the former airport terminal on Rte 9 in Bloomington. With names like Concorde, Warhawk, 727 Huey and DC-9, Arnie’s menu boasts 30 different sandwich platters ranging from $6.00 to $9.00, each including two sides from a choice of french or home fries, potato or pasta salad, coleslaw, fruit salad or cottage cheese. Besides 13 burger combinations, there are also ribeye steak, chicken breast, pork chop, and tenderloin sandwiches, even a buffalo burger, among others.

But as much as I enjoy the sandwiches (particularly the pork chop platter), the last time I dined at Arnie’s I decided to try one of their dinners, liver and onions to be exact. Now, I know a lot of people don’t care for liver, and I only have a craving periodically, but Arnie’s is definitely the place to go for this “delicacy”. Very tender, cooked to perfection and smothered with onions, the baby beef liver was delicious. Also included for $9.95 was a choice of chili, soup or salad; spaghetti, steamed vegetables or potato; and Arnie’s famous bread sticks, which are deep fried like donuts. It was a big meal and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Other dinner entrees include twelve Italian specialties, six seafood entrees, five chicken breast specialties, eight different chef salads plus steaks and chops. Dinners range from $10.00 to $17.00, with half-size fares available for those 60 and over for about $6.00 each.

In addition to good food, Arnie’s also offers a cafe-like atmosphere away from the maddening crowd. Windows overlooking the airport runway allow guests to watch planes take off and land during daylight hours. At night, when all you can see out the windows is blue runway lights, Arnie’s takes on a more cosmopolitan look. Light music in the background allows you to talk quietly and the friendly wait staff is very attentive. Open at 7:00 a.m. Mon.-Sat. and 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, until 8:00 p.m. weekends, Arnie’s at the (old) Airport serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. If you haven’t been there, you should definitely try it. Arnie’s is one of a kind.
