Sugar Creek Elementary School Ecology Club
Good Gardeners!
On a beautiful fall day in early October, 80 members of the Sugar Creek Elementary School Ecology Club spent some time sprucing up two of the school gardens near the building on North Towanda Ave. in Normal.
The first through sixth graders worked in teams during two shifts prior to lunch under the supervision of Advisor Pamala Eaton, who teaches physical education at the school.
One team worked on transferring new white rock in the Japanese Garden. This garden was created in 1998 through the efforts of Japanese and American families, students and staff. The white rock represents a stream in the picturesque garden.
The other team created scarecrows for sections of the school's Butterfly Garden. The Sugar Creek Butterfly Garden was established in 1993, and was the first of many such gardens in the Unit #5 school district. Students used old clothes, deflated playground balls, old newspapers and plastic grocery bags to create several scarecrows for the garden.
The garden work is an on-going project for the club, and older students help the younger club members. In the process, they learn the value of recycling, and appreciating and caring for nature. They learn that public art and recreation spaces are the result of teamwork, and they experience a greatsense of accomplishment through these activities.
