The Wampler sisters mean business when it comes to golf.
Kaitlyn and Jenna Wampler first showed an interest in golf at the tender ages of six and four, when they would ride along as their parents, Dave & Shelly Wampler, played together at Crestwicke Country Club. "It's a great family activity," explained Shelly," and Dave noticed right away the girls not only had an interest, but also a natural ability."
"We don't play together much anymore, since they can both can beat me. Now I watch and drive them to the tournaments."
Twelve year old Kaitlyn, a seventh grader at Holy Trinity Junior High School, scores in the low 40s, and Jenna (10), a fifth grader at Holy Trinity Elementary (formerly St. Clare), scores in the upper 40s for nine holes from the ladies tees at their home course (Crestwicke), and close to par at Royal Links Par 3 Course.
In 2000, they played in U.S. Kids World Golf Championship Tournament at Jekyll Island Resort, Georgia, qualifying as the top girl golfers in Illinois in their respective age groups, Jenna placing first in the state, and Kaitlyn qualifying with the lowest at large score in her age group in the U.S. Both girls finished 6th in the national tournament.
When asked what she enjoys most about playing golf, Jenna said: "the competition." No wonder.
Both Kaitlyn and Jenna are looking forward to competing in Bloomington-Normal's new COUNTRY Youth Classic Junior Golf Tournament being held June 24-26 on five Twin City golf courses. The three-day event, with divisions for ages 3 to 22, is expected to attract more than 500 young golfers from throughout the United States.
