MEANDERINGS 01 is a book featuring the writings of students in the Rivers Project schools in the United States. According to the Director of the Project, over 500 schools in over 30 states participate in the Project in one way or another. The science teachers and their students conduct the water quality tests; social science teachers and their classes evaluate the cultural and historical impact of rivers; and English teachers and their classes write research essays, poetry, short stories and do art work relating to the impact rivers and other bodies of water have on the lives of people - past, present and future.
The RIVERS CURRICULUM PROJECT, in its 12th year, is directed by SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY at EDWARDSVILLE. The Rivers Projects Primary goal is to bring water and river education to the schools of America. Recent reports from the U.S. EPA have 40% or more of American waterways not fit for human use. We cannot eat fish from these rivers nor can we easily drink the water without intense cleaning. The Project is funded by the National Science Foundation and published by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The published book is distributed by The Illinois State Library in Springfield, IL, to participating schools, The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and internationally. Some future day, a scholar may read from the books and open a window into a view of how young people see their world and their rivers.
Congratulations to all 19 BHS Writers!
