Constitution Trail
The Constitution Trail, built along the former Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, was opened on May 6, 1989, as a joint venture between the City of Bloomington and the Town of Normal. It was officially named and dedicated two years earlier in celebration of the 200th birthday of the United States Constitution. Because of its enormous popularity, both cities have developed trail plans for future development, calling for extensions to connect places of employment, commerce, schools, parks, and historic interest sites.
There are currently 13.5 miles of the 10 foot wide, asphalt trail in Bloomington-Normal, which is open to the public from dawn to dusk. It is non-motorized and available to walkers, joggers, bicyclists, roller bladers - and when there's snow, cross country skiiers. Trash receptacles, picnic tables, shelters, port-a-potties and benches are available at various locations along the trail. It is not cleared of snow and ice.
If you haven't discovered this wonderful recreational asset in our community yet, we urge you to do so as soon as possible. It's a great testiment to how unused land can be turned back into a useful community resource, and how our two communities have worked together to make it happen.
